Or, excuse me? Thought has color now?
The title of this article is actually a quote. You can find it on page 8 of The Richmond Voice (issue for August 9 - 15 2006), the local rag that caters exclusively to the Black population of Richmond. This... What exactly shall we call it? This attempt to overturn 5000 years of philosophy? This grotesquely, abominably, racist statement? This attempt to introduce America's greatest curse - the unrelieved self-pity, the perpetual victimhood, the unending resentment, of the American Black (god forbid that I should contravene the racial paranoia of JU and refer to them as what they actually are, American N******) into that field of human thought that extends in an unbroken arc from Socrates to the present day?
A Black mind?
I read The Richmond Voice for a variety of reasons. It passes the time while I wait for the laundry to go through its various cycles (it's given away free at the laundromat we use; free, because no Black would waste any part of his Welfare check on buying it - what? forego buying his fawty ounces in favor of a newspaper?); it provides an insight into the concerns of the more articulate members of the Black community, an insight that isn't to be had otherwise; and because, very occasionally, I find myself in agreement with some of its editorial and op-ed pieces, especially those concerning the effectiveness - or otherwise - of the city government.
Today was laundry day. So, having loaded the machines and set them going I sat myself down with a copy of the paper and began to read. Nothing of any great moment transpired until I came to page 8 which bears the headline 'Black episcopalians urged to focus on hard issues'.
Black Episcopalians? I was under the impression that Episcopalians are some variety of Christian - among whom, I was once led to believe, there is neither male nor female, nor even Greek or Jew:
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Apparently I was wrong. Not only are there Black Episcopalians, there are Black Episcopalians in possession of something referred to (by one Reverend Canon Nelson Pinder) as Black minds. Black minds... I doubt very much that those reading this will understand the sense of horror this grotesque, detestable statment induced in me; because, to date, I've yet to find anyone else who writes here who has an appreciation for the historical development of philosophy in the West, nor for the titanic struggles that have raged over that tradition for the past 5000 years, struggles that have involved the spilling not merely of ink but of blood.
The integrity (and the supreme, transcendent, value that has been attributed to that integrity) of the human creature is the core value, the fundamental basis, of the entire tradition of the philosophy of the West. Socrates died for it. The French waged the bloodiest and most destructive conflict of their national life over it. Thomas Acquinas, the greatest and most potent thinker ever produced by Christendom, labored his entire life to validate it. Luther sanctioned the slaughter of countless thousands of European peasants in order, precisely, to secure it. Immanuel Kant, the greatest and most subtle philosopher of the Modern epoch, suffered the torments of Hell in the process of reconciling that value with the necessary existence of the State - and in the process of doing so gave birth to that fantastical creature which is the bedrock of American culture - the individual.
And this... reverend... individual annihilates this tradition, and with it its unimaginable cost in human struggle and suffering, with a single and utterly glib phrase. A Black mind is a terrible thing to waste. There is no such thing as a Black mind. If it were possible for such a philosophical abomination to exist then the entire history of struggle and suffering involved in establishing the integrity of the human creature as one, and only one, type of entity has been an utter and complete waste of effort and blood - and we may as well surrender to the Islamist tyrants and their Caliphate right now, because without the undergirding support of the Graeco-Christian tradition of philosophy we are left with no answer to, no alternative to, the philosophical foundations of Islam. Dear God, just how stupid are you ignorant motherfuckers anyway?
Not only is this true, but the entire struggle of American slaves for their freedom and independence is utterly invalidated. If humanity is not of one mind, if the fundamental principle of the integrity of the human creature as one, and only one, type of being is to be invalidated in this way, then there is no counter-argument to Aristotle's statement that the slave is nothing more than a living tool - and that the fitness of human creatures to own such living tools is demonstrated through war and conquest. Those who conquer are human; those who are conquered are fitted, by nature, to be slaves. The exact same type of conquest that American Blacks claim to have been subjected to and to have suffered from since the first slaves were brought from Africa and the Caribbean to the USA.
With one blindly ignorant statement, this reverend fool has justified, in the face of a congregation as ignorant as he himself is, the very basis of the slavery that Blacks in America continue to protest is the basis of their social inequality. If there is such a thing as a Black mind, which there is not, then the basis of slavery is justified and every Black in America ought at once to acknowledge the superiority of the White race - because it was Whites who made of them 'living tools' - and they could not have done so unless they were possessed of a 'White mind' of infinitely greater superiority to the 'Black mind' of the slave class.
Black Episcopalians, possessed of Black minds... The ignorance of Americans, of both skin colors, continues to astound and horrify me. But I suppose it's only just: the folly of the fool is it's own punishment. And truly, when it comes to such things, America is a nation of fools.
